ROYAL RAINDROPS® CRABAPPLE

The Royal Raindrops® crabapple is a popular ornamental tree known for its striking appearance and attractive features. This cultivar is a member of the Malus genus, which includes various species of apple and crabapple trees.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS:

  1. Appearance: Royal Raindrops® crabapples are small to medium-sized deciduous trees that typically reach a height of 15 to 20 feet with a similar spread. They are known for their rounded, compact form and dense canopy. The tree’s growth habit makes it suitable for use as an ornamental focal point in landscapes, in small gardens, or as part of a mixed planting.
  2. Foliage: One of the standout features of this crabapple is its purple-red foliage, which emerges in spring and persists throughout the growing season. The leaves are deeply cut and resemble the appearance of fern fronds. The striking foliage color adds visual interest and makes this tree an attractive choice for landscaping.
  3. Flowers: In spring, Royal Raindrops® produce an abundance of vibrant pink to red flowers. These blossoms are single and semi-double, creating a beautiful contrast with the purple-red leaves. The blooms attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, making it a beneficial tree as well.
  4. Fruit: As with many crabapple varieties, Royal Raindrops® produces small, round fruit in the fall. These fruits are about 1/2 inch in diameter and have a deep red color, adding to the tree’s ornamental appeal. While the fruit is not typically used for human consumption due to its tart taste, it is a valuable food source for birds and wildlife during the colder months.
  5. Disease Resistance: This crabapple cultivar is known for its resistance to common apple diseases, such as apple scab and powdery mildew. Its strong disease resistance contributes to its overall health and longevity in the landscape.
  6. Maintenance: Royal Raindrops® trees are relatively low-maintenance once established. They prefer full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Regular pruning may be necessary to maintain the tree’s shape and remove dead or diseased branches. Additionally, annual fertilization can promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage.
  7. Landscape Use: These trees are commonly used in landscape designs to add color and interest. They work well as specimen trees, in group plantings, or along borders.

ALLEE® ELM

The Allee® Elm is a cultivar of the American Elm tree species. It is known for its distinctive upright and vase-shaped growth habit, making it a popular choice for landscaping and urban planting.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS:

  1. Appearance: Allee® Elms are medium to large-sized deciduous trees that typically grow to a height of 60 feet with a similar spread. They have a strong, single trunk that divides into several arching branches, forming a classic vase shape.
  2. Leaves: The leaves of Allee® Elms are dark green and have a classic elliptical shape. They are serrated along the edges and can turn a golden yellow in the fall, providing attractive autumn foliage.
  3. Bark: The bark of these trees is grayish-brown and becomes furrowed with age.
  4. Resistance to Dutch Elm Disease: One of the most significant features of the Allee® Elm is its resistance to Dutch Elm Disease (DED), which is a fungal disease. Allee® Elms, however, have shown a high degree of resistance to DED, making them a valuable choice for areas where the disease is prevalent.
  5. Urban Tolerance: Allee® Elms can tolerate a range of soil conditions and are low-maintenance trees. Their vase-shaped growth habit and resistance to DED make them a preferred choice for planting along streets, in parks, and in other urban settings.
  6. Pest and Disease Resistance: Apart from DED resistance, Allee® Elms are also known for their resistance to elm leaf beetle and Japanese beetle, common pests that affect other elm species.
  7. Maintenance: Like most trees, Allee® Elms benefit from regular pruning, especially when they are young, to develop a strong and well-structured canopy. They should also be watered adequately, especially during dry periods, to establish a healthy root system.

AUTUMN BLAZE® MAPLE

The Autumn Blaze® Maple is a popular deciduous tree known for its vibrant fall foliage and fast growth rate. It is not a naturally occurring species but rather a hybrid between the silver maple and the red maple. This hybrid was developed to combine the best characteristics of both parent species.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS:

  1. Appearance: Autumn Blaze® Maples have a rounded to oval shape with a dense canopy of bright green leaves during the growing season. 2. Size: These trees are known for their rapid growth. They can reach a height of 40 to 50 feet and have a similar spread when mature.
  3. Bark: Younger trees have smooth, silver-gray bark that gradually develops fissures and becomes rougher as the tree matures.
