Rex Begonia
Rex begonias have some of the most colorful foliage for houseplants! They make the perfect collection specimen because they come in so many color combinations and leaf shapes. They are known to be a bit finicky at first, but once you figure out their needs they will reward you with outstanding unique foliage.
LIGHT: Medium to bright indirect light. Be careful of giving this plant too much (if any) direct, unfiltered sun as it can burn the leaves. Rex begonias can grow well under fluorescent lights.
HUMIDITY: Rex begonias aren’t too picky about humidity levels, but 50% is preferable. During the dry winter months, consider using a humidifier or pebble tray if the leaves start to dry out or put the plant in a bathroom window. Avoid misting because the leaves are prone to powdery mildew. They do best in moderate temperatures between 60-70°F.
WATERING: Keep the soil evenly moist, but be careful not to overwater. Allow the top soil to dry out slightly before watering again. Begonias are prone to powdery mildew, so avoid allowing water to stand on the leaves.
PROPAGATION: Rex begonias can be propagated by rhizome division or leaf-tip cuttings. To divide, gently remove the soil from the roots and separate the rhizome bulbs. To propagate from leaf-tip cuttings, make a cut 2-3” from the top of a stem with clean scissors or knife. Dip the end in rooting hormone and plant in a well-draining soil. Water the cutting in.
OTHER CARE:
- Fertilize begonias regularly with a balanced liquid formula at 1⁄4 strength, or a gentle fertilizer like fish emulsion or Superthrive.
- Rotate your plant every time you water to make sure it receives even light on all sides.
- During the winter months, cut back on watering a bit.
