How to Plant and Care for Azaleas in Oklahoma

Azaleas are a beautiful addition to any landscape, bringing vibrant color in the spring and lush greenery throughout the year. However, they require specific care to thrive, especially in Oklahoma’s unique climate. Follow these guidelines to ensure your azaleas grow healthy and strong.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT LOCATION

• Sun Exposure: Azaleas prefer morning sun and afternoon shade. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while too much shade can reduce blooming.
• Wind Protection: Choose a spot sheltered from strong winds to prevent drying out and winter damage.

SOIL PREPARATION & AMENDMENTS

• Acidic Soil: Azaleas thrive in soil with a pH between 5.0 and 6.5. Oklahoma’s soil is often too alkaline, so amending it is crucial.  Soil sulphur applications will help lower the pH.
• Organic Matter: Mix peat moss, pine bark, and/or Marcum’s Nursery’s Redbud Compost into the planting area to improve drainage and increase acidity.
• Raised Beds: If your soil has heavy clay, consider planting azaleas in raised beds with well-draining soil.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

• Dig a wide, shallow hole – about twice the width of the root ball but no deeper than the plant was growing in its container.
• Loosen the roots gently before placing the plant in the hole.
• Backfill with amended soil, lightly pressing it down to remove air pockets.
• Water thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil.
• Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

WATERING & MOISTURE NEEDS

• Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy.

• During the first growing season, water deeply twice a week, adjusting based on rainfall.

• Established azaleas need 1 inch of water per week, especially during dry periods.

• Avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.

FERTILIZING & ONGOING CARE

• Apply a slow-release, acid-loving plant fertilizer in early spring and again after flowering.  We recommend Marcum’s Nursery Azalea Food, ferti-lome Azalea/Evergreen Food (which also has a systemic insecticide to protect plants from many insects), or Espoma® Holly-Tone® (if you prefer an organic fertilizer).  
• Avoid over-fertilizing, as too much nitrogen can reduce blooms.
• Prune right after blooming to shape the plant and encourage growth without cutting off next year’s buds.

WINTER PROTECTION

• Apply a thick layer of mulch in late fall to insulate roots from temperature fluctuations.

• In colder regions of Oklahoma, consider wrapping young plants or using burlap screens for added protection.
