Pecan Trees

CHOOSING PECAN TREES

The main considerations when choosing and planting pecan trees are ensuring adequate space as they grow very large (up to 70′ tall and 50′ wide), the necessity of two or more complementary varieties for good pollination, and ensuring the planting site is well-draining.

Marcum’s Nursery regularly stocks several improved pecan varieties that perform well in Oklahoma.  Below are varieties you can find at Marcum’s Nursery for spring 2024, a list of additional varieties we have had in stock very recently, and a pollination chart to help you choose complementary varieties.

PECAN VARIETIES FOR 2024

Each year, we stock pecan varieties that perform well in our climate.  Most years, the varieties we stock are almost the same as our inventory from the previous year.  However, a variety or two sometimes varies from year to year.  Below are the varieties we have secured for 2024.

POLLINATION COMPATIBILITY CHART

Use the Pollination Compatibility Chart (right) from Texas Pecan Nursery, Inc., a wholesale grower from which Marcum’s Nursery sources pecan trees, to help determine which pecan tree varieties are complementary pollinators.

Pecan Tree Pollination:
Pecan trees bloom and shed pollen at separate times, making pecan tree pollination different from fruit trees.

Type I pecan trees and Type II pecan trees.
For adequate cross pollination between pecan trees, it is highly recommended you grow at least one of each type. (1 & 2)

TYPE 1:  Pecan trees shed pollen first and their pistillate flowers are receptive of pollen later in the season.  These varieties are referred to as Protandrous, having a “Type I” flowering habit.

TYPE 2: Pecan trees that have pistillate flowers that are receptive to pollen first and then their catkins shed pollen later in the season. These trees are referred to as Protogynous, having a “Type II” flowering habit.
