Trees – The Backbone of the Landscape

Trees – The Backbone of the Landscape

Trees are the backbone of the landscape.  They provide beauty, enhance your home’s appearance, and can even increase property values anywhere from 3-15% according to research from the Arbor Day Foundation.  As such, they should be among your first considerations when planning your home’s landscape.

We have good news – your search for the best selection of Oklahoma proven trees begins and ends at Marcum’s Nursery, Oklahoma’s Tree Headquarters!

Begin searching for trees meeting your needs and reflecting your style by browsing some of our selections below.  Then visit one of our locations to speak with a tree expert to confirm your selections, provide advice on proper placement, and equip you with the knowledge and tools you need for success.

SHADE TREES

Who hasn’t enjoyed the relief provided by the leafy crown of a shade tree on a hot, summer day?  According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a shade tree can reduce surrounding air temperatures by 6°F and air temperatures directly under shade trees can be as much as 25°F cooler than air temperatures above nearby blacktops.  A well-placed shade tree can also reduce energy costs in both summer and winter months by blocking hot sun and cold wind. We certainly appreciate and welcome the aforementioned benefits, but as plant enthusiasts we appreciate the shade tree for her magic, beauty, and, in some cases, her lovely fall show as well.

EVERGREEN TREES

Most great landscape designs include at least an evergreen or two, and for good reasons.  Evergreen trees are undeniably beautiful in all seasons, but they really get their chance to shine in winter months.  When the branches of deciduous trees and shrubs are bare, evergreen trees and shrubs keep the landscape interesting and colorful year-round. Evergreen’s natural aesthetics are reason enough to include them in your landscape, but it is worth mentioning that they also can reduce energy costs, and they are great for sound and wind relief as well as providing a bit more privacy when deciduous trees have gone dormant for the winter.

FLOWERING TREES

Does your landscape need a big pop of color?  A flowering tree might be just what the (tree) doctor ordered!  Flowering trees are a great way to add a pop of color and texture to your landscape, and there is a flowering tree for almost any design preference and growing environment.

FRUIT & NUT TREES

One of the most rewarding things you can do is start a fruit tree orchard of your own. Not only will it save you money, but it will also give you the satisfaction of knowing your fruit came from your own land! But there are so many fruit trees from which to choose, so what should you plant? This article will give you a brief overview of some of the most popular fruit trees and will include varieties that perform well in our area and that are regularly in stock at a Marcum’s Nursery near you.

JAPANESE MAPLE TREES

Japanese maples are a favorite in landscapes around the world.  Their most striking feature is their vibrant foliage in various shades of red, green, orange, and purple.  They also come in a variety of sizes and growth habits, some even have very interesting bark colors to add winter interest to the garden.  If you have a spot with some wind protection and reprieve from the hot afternoon Oklahoma sun, we know a Japanese maple would love lovely there!

ORNAMENTAL TREES

We do appreciate the practicality of fruit-bearing trees and those that provide shade during hot days, but we also love ornamental trees simply for the beauty they bring to a space.  Be sure to leave some room in your landscape for a tree (or two) that just enhances the visual appeal of the surroundings.
